For 44 years, ordinary people doing extraordinary things has been the bedrock of the Great North Run. They are the Great North Run!

Whether 2025 is their first Great North Run, or they have completed many, our runners will stand on the startline alone but run together, united by this great event.

Long-time fundraiser Jason Vickers, 56, from Burnham-on-Sea will once again take on the iconic Great North Run this year – but with an extra special mission in mind. After 18 years of tireless fundraising for the MS Society, Jason is within touching distance of raising an incredible £50,000 for the charity.

Jason has already raised over £33,000 through countless events including previous Great North Runs, the Great South Run, and the London Landmarks Half Marathon. This year’s run, however, may be one of his last half marathons due to a persistent leg injury – making the 2025 Great North Run even more meaningful.

“The Great North Run is always the highlight of my calendar,” Jason says. “There’s something about the people – the runners, the volunteers, the spectators – that makes it unlike any other event. I raise around £400 each time I run it, which is a huge help towards my fundraising goal.”

Inspired by Olympic legend Sir Mo Farah, Jason credits his perseverance to Mo’s determination and fighting spirit. Jason had the honour of meeting Sir Mo at a past event – just one of many inspiring moments throughout his running journey which also included carrying the Olympic torch in 2012 as it passed through Somerset.

Jason runs 3–4 times a week along the Burnham-on-Sea seafront and encourages newcomers to pace themselves and enjoy the atmosphere. “Train smart, listen to advice on the day, and soak it all in – it’s a spectacular event.”

With retirement on the horizon and his leg reminding him that time is precious, Jason is determined to go the distance one last time for the MS Society, for those affected by the condition, and for everyone who has ever been inspired to keep going when things get tough.

“I just hope that in some small way, I’ve inspired others to never give up,” he says. “That’s what this run is all about.”

September 7th isn’t about a time or a medal for Jason, he’s running to support others. And because of this he’s already a winner.

Everyone is a story. And together, we are the Great North Run.
