The Runner’s Guide to Manchester

Here at Great Run, we’ve got a soft spot for Manchester. Every year, we go west to host the legendary Great Manchester Run, with a route that takes in some of the city’s greatest sights and landmarks.

And every year, we’re struck by Manchester’s energy, attitude and top vibes. If cities were runners, the unofficial capital of the North West would be leading with a swagger, headphones blasting Oasis and high-fiving everyone along the way.

Manchester, we can’t get enough of you – and here’s why.

Why we love Manchester (and you will, too)

Manchester’s got style – and it’s got soul. From the industrial revolution to the Hacienda glory days, this city doesn’t just make history: it dances to it, too. Whether you’re pounding the pavement down Deansgate or sprinting past Salford Quays, there’s always something to see and an inimitable spirit to soak up.

Plus the local support is incredible: on race day, the streets are packed with cheering crowds, banging tunes and enough energy to power a textile mill. Mancunians will cheer you on like you’re Mo Farah’s long-lost cousin.

Must-run routes

Fancy a 5K with a side of sightseeing? Start on Oxford Street, heading to St Peter’s Square, then St Anne’s Square before heading to Manchester Cathedral. Then cross the bridge at Blackfriars Street and along the canal. Through Spinningfields, past the Science and Industry Museum and around various waterways to Castlefield, then over the bridge at Lower Mosley Street and back to the beginning again — historic feels and chic cityscape, all in one loop (map here – route 3).

Need a longer route? Starting and ending at St Mary’s Parsonage close to Blackfriars Street, this route takes you past the People’s History and Science and Industry Museums and skirting the A57 to the A6. Then through New Islington, Ancoats and the Green Quarter before heading into Greengate and ending up back where you started. Scenic, urban, and 100% Manchester – map here.

Found your (running) tribe

Manchester’s full of friendly running clubs and crews, whether you’re a newbie or chasing a new PB. Check out:

  • MileShy Club – We’ve already name-checked the MileShy Club, but they’re so great they deserve another mention. Great for beginners and those building confidence.
  • Chorlton Runners – Big community feels and at least two social runs per week.
  • ManchesterRunClub – 5km run every week, with groups to suit paces from 4:30/kn to 7:00/km.
  • Salford Harriers – For speedies who like a challenge (and a bit of coaching)

See our other Manchester Running Club picks here – there’s something for everyone!

Fuel up and wind down

Before a big run, hit up Federal Café – which makes the bold claim of being the home of the UK’s best brunch – for some avocado toast or delicious pancakes. The Pen and Pencil is another top spot for coffee and carbs or dinner and cocktails depending if you’re fuelling up or winding down.

Sticking in the Northern Quarter, Yard and Coop, Another Heart to Feed or Rudy’s Pizza are all great for food, coffee/beer and bragging about your new PB. And if you’re in the mood to *really* celebrate? Albert’s Schloss has live music, pretzels and steins. Ja, danke!

So, there you have it: reasons why we (and you) will love Manchester for running. And if you’re looking for a spring event, look no further than the Great Manchester Run. See you on the start line!
